Giving jewellery means risking getting her taste wrong. These pieces take that risk away, and one of them even leaves the final choice to the person who receives it.
It isn't the budget. It's taste.
Jewellery is one of the few gifts that's worn on the body, in full view of everyone. Choosing the wrong piece puts the person who receives it in an awkward position: either she wears it without liking it, or she doesn't wear it and you'll notice. Nobody wants that, and it's why we hesitate for so long in front of a jewellery counter.
This page brings together the jewellery gifts for her that solve that problem, each in its own way.
This is our favourite answer, and it's a simple one: give a build-your-own charm necklace.
She receives a chain and five charms: one already fitted on the central ring, ready to wear as soon as the box is opened, and four delivered loose, each with its own fastening. She clips on the ones she wants, in the order she wants, and changes them whenever she likes. It takes a minute, with no tools and no mirror.
What it changes: you're no longer giving a choice, you're giving a possibility. The risk of getting her taste wrong disappears, because the taste is hers and it comes into play after the unwrapping. And the gift carries on long afterwards, since it's never quite the same two weeks running.
It's also, quite literally, five pieces of jewellery in one. See our charm necklaces.
The second family on this page answers a specific situation: giving to someone whose style you don't know. A colleague, a mother-in-law, a friend you see twice a year.
A clover, a star, a moon, a sun: these motifs carry an intention (luck, a wish, a thought) without committing to a feeling. They're received without anyone wondering "what did he mean by that?".
That's exactly the difference with the heart, which is lovely to give but says something precise. Just know what you're giving: both make good gifts, they're simply not for the same people. Among necklaces for girlfriend gifts, the heart is the classic; for a best friend necklace, a clover or a star often says it better.
The third family: necklaces whose price lets you give without the amount becoming the topic.
This is the territory of the group present, the Secret Santa, the little something you bring back for no particular reason. None of our necklaces is priced like fine jewellery, and that's deliberate.
The price doesn't come from a cut-price material. It comes from what we mostly sell: stainless steel with a gold or silver colour finish, not hallmarked gold. A metal that won't tarnish on skin and won't leave the green mark of common alloys. Jewellery made to be worn rather than kept in a box.
A necklace for mum is probably the most common reason people visit this page. In the UK, Mother's Day (Mothering Sunday) falls in March, earlier than in much of Europe, so it's worth planning ahead. A Mother's Day necklace works from one generation to the next, and its format, an object she keeps, says what the card doesn't.
A Christmas necklace calls for something different: it arrives among lots of other presents, often in front of everyone. That's where the build-your-own necklace comes into its own, because it creates a moment rather than an object: you open it, sort the charms, try them on, ask the table what they think.
For Valentine's Day, the heart remains the obvious answer: our heart necklaces gather them all.
For Secret Santa and group presents, start with the simplest pieces on this page.
And for a birthday, the choice comes down to the person: a lucky charm if you don't know her well, a heart if you do.
Every necklace is sent in its gift box, slipped into a silver envelope, ready to give as it is. You have nothing to wrap, nothing to repack, nothing to remove.
Above all: no price appears inside. It's a detail nobody talks about, and it spoils countless presents: the price tag forgotten at the bottom of the box. That's what makes each of our necklaces a ready-made jewellery gift.
Two guidelines, and they almost always do the trick.
The colour: look at what she already wears on her wrist or her finger. If it's gold, choose from our gold necklaces; if it's silver, our silver necklaces. It's the one guide that never fails.
The length: between 40 and 45 centimetres (around 16 to 18 inches), a necklace falls just below the collarbone and suits almost every neckline. That's the safe default, and almost all our chains are adjustable anyway.
And if you're still in doubt, go back to the first idea on this page: give the necklace she'll finish choosing herself. You can also browse all our necklaces for women.
