The clover necklace: a lucky charm you don't have to believe in

A clover necklace belongs to a very particular family: jewellery that carries an intention. You don't buy it only for its shape, you buy it for what it's meant to bring your way.

The beauty of it is that it works both ways. If you believe in luck, it carries it. If you don't, it remains a perfect geometric shape, four even leaves around a centre, which reads from a metre away and belongs to no particular decade.

That's also why it's so easy to give. Wishing someone luck commits nobody to anything, and yet the message is understood straight away.

Four leaves or three: which one are you wearing?

It sounds like a detail, and it isn't, because the two don't say the same thing.

The three-leaf clover is the common clover of the fields, the shamrock. It has a long symbolic history, famously in Ireland, but there is nothing exceptional about it: you'll find it everywhere.

The four leaf clover necklace carries a botanical oddity. A four-leaf clover turns up roughly once in ten thousand, and all of its meaning comes from that rarity: it isn't the plant that brings luck, it's the fact of having found it.

Our necklaces carry the four-leaf clover. It's the one people look for, and the one that means something when you give it.

Open metal or set with stones: two moods

The clover lends itself to two very different treatments, and the choice changes the whole look of the necklace.

In open metal, the four leaves are drawn by their outline and let the light through. The clover pendant stays light, graphic, almost abstract. This is the discreet version, the one you wear every day without ever feeling it.

Set with diamanté or zircons, the clover catches the light with every movement, and some come in colours, pink or green. The necklace becomes dressier, and the sparkle softens the outline of the metal. It also comes on a strand of faux pearls, for a softer version.

The clover also appears as a charm on our charm necklaces, alongside the heart and the star. Three symbols on the same chain, each with its own wish.

Gold or silver clover necklace

As a gold clover necklace, the clover warms up and the shape looks fuller. Gold is the finish that suits the faux pearl clover best, pushing its white towards cream. Browse all our gold necklaces.

As a silver clover necklace, the four leaves stand out more sharply and the outline gains precision. This is the most contemporary version, and the one that goes with cooler colours. See all our silver necklaces.

As always, the simplest guide is what you already wear on your wrist or your finger.

How high to wear it, and with what

The clover is best worn close to the face, just below the collarbone: at that height, the shape stays readable and the pendant doesn't get lost.

It doesn't like competing with another strong motif at the same height. It does, on the other hand, layer beautifully with a plain chain necklace, shorter or longer: two heights, a single focal point. It's the surest way to give it depth without drowning it. Worn higher still, a clover sits well among our choker necklaces.

All our clover necklaces are adjustable: the extender lets you change the height as you fasten it, no mirror needed.

A gift that says something without asking for anything

Giving a clover means wishing someone well. It's a warm intention, and it makes nobody uncomfortable, unlike the heart, which speaks of a specific feeling.

That's why it works in situations where other motifs feel too loaded: an exam, a house move, a new job, a farewell. You're not giving a piece of jewellery, you're giving a wish, and the jewellery is simply what carries it. More ideas in our necklace gifts for her.

What it's made of, and how to care for it

Our clover necklaces are made of stainless steel: it won't tarnish on skin and won't leave the green mark that ordinary costume jewellery alloys can. A lucky charm you take off because it marks your skin isn't much use.

Take the necklace off before the shower, the pool and sport. Put your perfume on before your necklace, never after. Store it somewhere dry in its gift box, away from anything that could rub against it.

Every necklace is sent in its gift box, ready to give as it is, and a lucky charm is probably the easiest present to get right.
